HKRS was originally found in 1986 by a group of expatriates who take trains as a hobby, especially steam trains. Regular monthly meetings taking place at Henry G. Leung Yau Ma Tei Community Centre.

The usual activities during the meeting include:
* slides/video shows from members who visited overseas or China
* Railway videos - from all over the world
* invite Railway professionals to explain railway technical concepts (eg. ATP project)

And because of our members come from different countries and backgrounds. We conduct our meeting in both English and Cantonese.

Apart from our regular meeting, HKRS also organises some weekend trips and visits. We visited the Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works at Qingdao, Shandong province, narrow gauge railway at Hunan province, Shaoguang Electric Locomotive Depot just to name a few. In Hong Kong, we are the first group of public who rode on the 12-car ktt (This was held in Summer 1997, nearly 6 months before entered the first passenger service to Lo Wu). We had visited Hung Hom diesel running shed. And more recently, Siu Ho Wan Depot for Tung Chung Line and Airport Express as well as West Rail of KCRC.

Meanwhile, we had a presentation talk for any different kind of student in school. We are very welcome any school or college for information.

The main objective of the society is to have a group of people who enjoy railways get together and meet new friends who have similar interests. As a result, members will be able to learn about railways in general.

HKRS is purely a hobby orientated society, and of course, we have members from the railway professionals - MTR, KCR and other railway related companies who also like trains very much.

As HKRS is voluntarily operated by our members and only charge a minimal subscription fees for daily operating expenses. We appreciate members' help/contribution in order to get the society running.
